Today is Medical Monday, and I am co-hosting with Your Doctor's Wife, From A Doctor's Wife, and Lives of Doctor Wives! My husband is a fourth year medical student of West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. I write about him often on the blog, but have never written a truly medical post, so here goes! I will give you the story of what its been like to be married to a medical student and what our future holds.
Hubby and I met in college and started dating our sophomore year. During our senior year, Hubby applied, interviewed, and was accepted to medical school. He was then commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army to pay for medical school and become a doctor for the Army. Sometime after that, we decided that we were moving to Lewisburg, WV together. After we graduated he went to Officer Training School in Texas for most of the summer while I prepared for our big move. Thanks to the help of our parents we moved and medical school began shortly after. It was the beginning of a whole new chapter for us. Neither one of us had friends there and our families were further away. But it did great things for our relationship, since we had each other. I thought I knew what studying was like in college, but studying in medical school is a whole different ballgame. I remember thinking if we were doing this long distance I wouldn't understand why he was reading 10x more than in college and not calling me all the time, so I was glad I was there and able to support him and spend his available time with him. I immediately got a job at Peebles, a small department store, and waited for my West Virginia teaching certificate so that I could start subbing in the school district, since there weren't any music teacher openings. We started making friends with the other medical students and their significant others and making Lewisburg our home. On our third dating anniversary (halfway through first year), he proposed. That summer was really his last full summer off and we were able to get married and go on our honeymoon. Second year was filled with even more studying, so I joined a choir and jazz orchestra. While he was studying for his Step 1 Boards, I was having a great time hanging out with the other spouses. After two years of classroom studies, it was time to move to our chosen region for rotations. WVSOM sends their students across West Virginia to different hospitals to do rotations, and we ended up in Weirton, near Pittsburgh. We moved up here with eleven other students from WVSOM who became our Weirton family. Rotations are like student teaching. Hubby goes to work everyday, doing different specialties every month, puts in a regular work day in that field, and comes home. Its just like he was a working doctor, except he doesn't get paid. Most of the time he has weekends off and a normal schedule. We've been able to visit our families more often and hang out with our college friends who live in Pittsburgh. And now we're less than two months away from graduation! Right after graduation, we are moving to Tacoma, WA to Fort Lewis-McChord for his general surgery residency. Three other WVSOMers are also going there for residency, so we already have friends, and I have an uncle and some cousins out there too. We're going to miss the East Coast, but are excited to start the next chapter of our lives. And adopt our first puppy together :)
